What Actually Ages Out, and How Fast

Manufacturers publish replacement windows for a reason: five years from the date of first use, or seven years from the manufacture date stamped inside, whichever comes first. That stamp is usually on a sticker under the comfort liner or on the EPS itself.
Here’s what I’ve measured in practice. A helmet stored in a hot garage in Phoenix hit noticeably firmer, less resilient foam by year four. The same model kept indoors in a closet still felt acceptable at year five. Heat is the variable nobody budgets for. If your gear lives in a car trunk or a metal shed through summer, treat every published interval as a ceiling, not a target.
Other items age on different clocks:
- Helmets: 5 years of use or 7 from manufacture. Any single hard impact, replace immediately, even if the shell is unmarked.
- Boots: soles wear through in 2-3 seasons of regular riding; buckles and stitching usually go first. A blown sole seam is a real injury risk, not a cosmetic issue.
- Gloves: 1-2 seasons. Palm leather hardens, seams split at the thumb web, and knuckle armor cracks.
- Body armor and chest protectors: 4-6 years, mostly because the foam inserts harden and the elastic straps stretch out.
- Goggles: lens scratches matter more than frame age. A scratched lens scatters light at night and in low sun, which is when you actually need to see.
Devon’s helmet was a seven-year-window model at nine years old, stored in a shed. Two strikes.
The Five-Minute Inspection I Run Before Every Season
You don’t need a shop. You need a bright light, ten minutes, and the willingness to be honest about what you find. Here’s the sequence I use, in order:
- Find the manufacture date. Helmet first, then boots and armor. If you can’t find it, that’s your answer: assume it’s expired.
- Squeeze the liner foam. Press the EPS behind the ear pads with your thumb. It should push back fast. If it stays compressed or crumbles at the edge, the helmet is done.
- Check the shell for spider cracks around the rivets and the rim. Hairline cracks radiating from a fastener mean the shell took a load it didn’t recover from.
- Flex the chin strap and look for fraying where it meets the shell. A strap that’s fuzzy at the anchor point is a strap that will fail in a slide.
- Bend each boot buckle and inspect the sole seam with a flashlight. Any separation over 3mm, replace the boot or get it resoled by a cobbler who does moto work.
- Twist the glove palms and pull the thumb web apart. If it tears with light pressure, it’s already gone.
- Hold goggle lenses up to a lamp. Scratches you can feel with a fingernail will flare at night.
Last fall a reader sent me photos of his setup after running this list. He found a cracked shell rivet he’d ridden on for two seasons without noticing. The replacement cost him $180 on closeout. Everything else, buy used without much guilt. Boots, knee braces, chest protectors, jerseys. I’ve bought three pairs of lightly used boots for under $90 each and gotten two full seasons out of two of them. Check the sole seam and the buckle springs, then ride. Everything else can be patched, resoled, and stretched. The helmet can’t.
