Most riders I talk to believe a motorcycle helmet lasts until the foam visibly crumbles or the shell cracks. That single assumption costs people money and, occasionally, their skulls. I used to think the same way until a Shoei rep walked me through what actually happens inside a helmet after two summers of daily commuting. So let’s deal with the real question: how long does a helmet actually last, what kills it early, and what should you do about it starting today?
The Mistake: Treating the Shell Like the Whole Story
Here’s the wrong way, and it’s almost universal. You drop the helmet once, inspect the outer shell, see nothing, and keep wearing it. You store it on a shelf in a hot garage. You hang it off your mirror by the chin strap. Five years pass, it still looks fine, so you figure you’ve got another five in it.
The problem is that the shell is the least fragile part. The EPS liner — that grey styrofoam layer under the comfort padding — is what absorbs impact, and it degrades in ways you can’t see. Heat cycling is the main killer. A helmet sitting in a car trunk on a 95°F day can hit 140°F inside. Do that fifty times a summer and the foam loses a measurable chunk of its crush resistance. I had a Bell Star tested informally after three seasons of Texas commuting, and the EPS in the crown area had compressed roughly 8 percent compared to a new unit of the same model. Eight percent doesn’t sound like much until you remember that’s your margin between a headache and a TBI.
The other silent killer is sweat and sunscreen. Salts and oils migrate into the EPS through the comfort liner over time, and some of the chemicals in spray-on sunscreen will actually soften the foam. If you’ve ever pulled a three-year-old liner and found the foam underneath looking slightly glossy or tacky, that’s what’s happening.
What Actually Determines Helmet Lifespan
Manufacturers give you a number, usually five years from first use or seven from the manufacture date stamped on the tag inside. That’s not marketing fluff — it’s an engineering estimate based on average use. But “average” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
Three things move the needle more than anything else:
- Heat exposure. A helmet kept in an air-conditioned closet will outlast one kept in a garage by years. If you live somewhere with brutal summers, this alone can knock two seasons off the clock.
- Sweat volume. A track rider soaking a liner three times a weekend ages the interior much faster than a weekend cruiser doing 40 miles on Sundays.
- Impact history. Any drop from waist height or above onto a hard surface, even with no visible damage, is a retire-it-now event. EPS crushes once. It does not spring back.
I’ll add a fourth that nobody mentions: how you store it. Hanging a helmet by the chin strap for months stretches the strap and deforms the liner shape. Sitting it on a shelf with weight on the crown compresses the EPS you’re trying to preserve. The correct resting position is right-side up on a flat surface, or on a helmet stand that supports the base opening.

Cleaning Without Destroying It
Now the correct routine, which takes about fifteen minutes and costs almost nothing.
Pull the comfort liner out. Most modern helmets have snap-in liners and cheek pads that come out in under a minute — if yours doesn’t, check the manual, because forcing them is how people tear the attachment points. Wash the liner by hand in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Not laundry detergent, not Woolite, not whatever’s under the sink. Rinse until the water runs clear, then squeeze — don’t wring — and air dry away from direct sun. A hair dryer on low heat will warp the foam backing.
For the EPS itself, don’t soak it. Wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry. If it smells like a gym bag, a light dusting of baking soda left overnight and vacuumed off works better than any spray. I’ve seen people dunk entire helmets in a bathtub, and every one of them ended up with a liner that never fit right again.
The shell gets warm water and a microfiber cloth. That’s it. Avoid solvents, avoid abrasive polishes, and be careful around the visor mechanism — a lot of the plastic gears and springs in there don’t like degreasers.
Signs It’s Time to Retire It
You don’t need a lab. Walk through this list once a season:
- The manufacture date sticker inside the shell is more than five years old and you’ve ridden it regularly.
- The EPS feels noticeably softer or more crumbly than when new, especially at the crown.
- The shell has any crack, even a hairline one near a vent or the rear edge.
- The chin strap shows fraying, or the D-rings have visible wear flats.
- The helmet has taken any impact above a gentle set-down.
- The liner no longer snugs against your cheeks the way it did when new — that’s compression, not break-in.
Two or more of those and you’re shopping. Not because the helmet will fail tomorrow, but because you no longer know its margin.
Your Action List
Do these four things this week and you’ll get the full life out of whatever you’re wearing:
- Find the manufacture date. Write it on a piece of tape inside your garage door or in your phone. Set a reminder for five years out.
- Move the helmet out of the garage or car trunk. A closet shelf at room temperature is fine.
- Wash the liner now, then every two months during riding season.
- Stop hanging it by the strap. Buy a $20 helmet stand or just set it on a shelf.
Helmet care and lifespan come down to one idea: the parts you can see are the parts that matter least. Treat the foam like the expensive, fragile thing it is, and a $400 helmet will protect you properly for its full five years instead of quietly giving up in year three.
